Hi I'm completely new to the site and I have with some trepidation given in and decided to attempt the non medical nurse prescribing course this year! The course that I am due to commence is based in Stirling in Scotland and starts in September. Most of the posts that I have been reading relate to courses taking place in England and it seems that there are a wide variety of course content and assessments/exams throughout the country.
I would love to hear from anyone who has done the course in Stirling uni to give me some idea regarding the assignments and exam content. My weak point is maths and this particular aspect of the exam worries me..
I think this is a wonderful site and have been amazed at how you all support one another. Thanks in advance Marl |

Hi Marl,
While I cannot be of any help in regard what the NMP course is like at Stirling University, I might be able to put your mind at rest in regard to the maths aspect of the course. From my own experience, and that of other people I have talked to who have completed NMP, the maths examination should be fairly basic and should not be anything that cannot be picked up relatively easily - my own maths being admittedly dreadful, I found that a few hours practice working on the calculations brought me up to speed. The only relatively complicated calculation you may be asked to work out may possibly be an infusion rate; though, no doubt the formula for working these out will be drilled into your head by the University.
If I can do it, anyone can!
All the best of luck with your course. |

Hi Meatbag, Thank you so much for your reply. I have an awful feeling of dread at the thought of putting myself through the course but at the same time I know that it will be extremely useful to me in my clinical practice. I will be glued to this site for the next 8 months or so! Thanks again Marl |

Hi Marl, sorry new to this site so messed up last reply. I completed my Nurse Prescribing course 4 years ago at Paisley University. We have a local Nurse prescriber Forum in Glasgow. If I can help with course or support give me a shout. |

| wish i'd known there was a local forum in glasgow... i've just finished at paisley university and awaiting the results... i'm absolutely bricking it. hope stirling is more like caledonia uni course rather than the paisley one... cale write 5,000 words and paisley write 20,000.... i'm waiting on my results before i start making a noise about that with my prescribing hierarchy....lol |

I did mine through Stirling Uni. It was all web based with huge amounts of support and chat room linked to course You should have absolutely no worries. The maths is everyones head wreck, but all your fears should be alleviated as the course progresses, with a past paper to see near the end with an idea of what to expect. |

Hi Marl, unfortunately I did not receive your email. Each Trust is supposed to have a Prescribing Forum. Our Forum meets once every 2 months approx and is at Gartnavel Hosp, it is lead by a Senior Pharmacist. We sometimes have guest speakers to talk about new prescribing issues , guidelines etc, or we just chat about our prescribing experiences, problems etc. Its a good support network. Are you based in West Glasgow? Sorry meant to say the Forum is for Non medical Prescribers. Snail |
